About L'Escala and the Region
L'Escala is a holiday resort and fishing port at the southern end of the Golf of Roses in Girona province in northeastern Spain. The village is famous for its anchovies, sardines and fresh seafood. The old center of L´Escala, with its narrow streets sloping down to the rocky coastline, is a great place to take a leisurely stroll, do some shopping or just watch life go by from one of the numerous bars.
Nearby activities include golf, tennis, fishing, horse riding, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, and night clubs and of course bars, cafes and restaurants.
The region around L'Escala has a documented history stretching back more than 2,500 years. The Greeks and Romans were here in force, in 600 BC and in 575 AD, respectively, establishing a flourishing trading port at Empùries, just a couple of miles up the coast. The Romans expanded the original Greek settlement to include an amphitheatre, and highly sophisticated dwellings. The ruins are wonders to behold.
Girona province lies within the autonomous region of Catalonia, which abounds with hundreds of medieval villages with enclosed walls for protection against the warring feudal lords. Catalonia's fiercely independent nature is evident in Catalan, the region's language, which is distinct from Castilian Spanish. Nevertheless, many Catalans also speak Castilian and French and English speakers are increasingly common.
L'Escala is about 30 minutes from the market town of Figueres, home of the Salvador Dalí Museum. Barcelona, Catalonia's capital, is about 90 minutes away and hosts many attractions, including the Sagrada Familia Cathedral, numerous museums, shopping and the famous Rambla.
